SKALA POLICHNITOU
This picturesque fishing village is located app. 4
km from Polichnitos and traditionally acts as its
summer extension but it is an all around the year
village too, with its own St. John’s Church.
It is fringed with lush vegetation and olive groves,
faces the west coast of the Gulf of Kalloni and has
unparallel panoramic views in the gulf. The houses
with their extensive gardens / orchards are gathered
around the small but busy harbour which is
surrounded by tavernas and kafeneia.
It has a thriving fishing industry, with the famous
sardella (sardine) amongst other fish, being fished
here and scallops, mussels and oysters which are
exported in tones. The Salt produced at the Salt
Pans is also loaded here & shipped off for packaging
and export.
The village retains its traditional charm,
authenticity and the natural hospitality of the
villagers which have persuaded many British to buy
houses with land in the area and not just for summer
use.
The Salt Pans of Polichnitos are located at the far
end of Skala and produce the whitest salt in Europe
which is harvested once yearly. The Salt Pans are
also home to the flamingos and many other species of
birds, which birdwatchers from all over the word
come to observe every Spring & Autumn. Autumn
birdwatching at Skala Polichnitos is a very
rewarding experience since the Salt Pans here are
much wetter than at Skala Kallonis.
In the months of July & August each year the Fiesta
of Ouzo & the Fiesta of Trata (the sardine fishing
boat) are celebrated. Dates differ each year, so
check with the locals or at the Town Hall.
