Vatera

VATERA

Vatera, located on the south coast of Lesvos and looking out to the Aegean Sea started life as a summer costal settlement for the people of Vrisa and a place for fishing, agricultural and light industrial activities. Once upon a time it even had its own Customs House, a fine stone building, now sadly demolished. About 20 years ago the wonderful beach (10 km long, 40 feet wide), claimed to be the best in Lesvos was “discovered” and the rest is history as they say.

In the space of these 20 years Vatera has evolved into a hamlet in its own right and a very versatile resort all year around. During the winter months app. 150 people live in Vatera, enjoying the peace and tranquillity. It can accommodate divergent visitor requirements and can effectively be most things to most people all year around.

Plentiful quality tourist accommodation: rooms, studios, apartments, hotels, shops, car hire as well as tavernas, restaurants, cafeterias and bars can be found along the stretch of this magnificent beach making it an ideal destination for summer holidays.

However there are many country walks that can be enjoyed in the surrounding countryside and villages while you discover nature (wild flowers, orchids, butterflies etc) at its best not to mention to visit the Temple of Dionysus , the Achilles well and Paliopyrgos ( old Castle). Details of these walks and locations are included in the Walks Guide “Vatera Around & About”, which you can buy at Madonna Studios and walk independently.

In the Spring and the Autumn Vatera also gets visitors of the feathered kind. Birds, birds and more birds. As more information about Birdwatching in Lesvos has become available during the last 7 years,  Vatera has become the New Destination for birdwatching. The highlight locations are: Almyropotamos, Agios Focas and Profitis Ilias.
