Thermal Springs

The thermal springs of Lesvos have been well known since ancient times. They are regarded and used as valid therapeutic treatments for all kinds of ailments and are therefore prescribed by doctors. They are recommended for the treatment of chronic rheumatism, arthritis, sciatica, myalgic pain, gynaecological problems, skin conditions etc. The mineral waters are also inhaled for chronic catarrh, catarrh of the pharynx and the Eustachian tubes.

The Municipality of Polichnitos is doubly blessed because they are two Thermal Springs within its boundaries, both situated in secluded areas, amongst peaceful surroundings and amazing scenery. So they are good for the body as well as the soul since they provide a great relaxing and soothing experience.

The Thermal Springs of Polichnitos

There are five mineral springs within the site but only three are used. In the winter time you can see the springs from a distance due to the hot vapours rising from them. The bath house with the two original pools as built during the Turkish Occupation is retained and used (one for males, one for females). The bath facilities include the two domed indoor bathing pools and adjoining functional changing & relaxation rooms and refectory. Next to the bath buildings there is a circular outdoor pool for inhalation therapy. At the far end of the site you can see the old hot baths of “Christianos” which are not in use, due to renovation requirements. Although the water at the springs is boiling and too hot to touch, the temperature of the water in the pools is kept quite comfortable.

They are listed as the hottest mineral springs in Europe (60 - 90 degrees). They contain sodium chloride with a water temperature ranging from 67 to 92 degrees Centigrade and a water flow of 80 cubic meters per hour. The baths are 60 meters above the sea, close to the banks of the Almyropotamos River. The surrounding area looks like a different planet, whereby rivers boil and deposit residues of various colours and formations.

The river banks of Almyropotamos River into which they flow are coloured by the mineral salts contained in the spring water. The Springs are staffed and in operation all year around www.hotsprings.gr

The Thermal Springs of Lisvori

Just before the Church of St.John a left turning will take you to the Thermal Springs of Agios Ioannis which are of great therapeutic value. They are ideally suited for dermatological conditions, with temperatures of up to 69 C, radioactivity levels of 2.6 units and separate pools for men and women.

The hot spring facilities are comprised of two separate buildings, only one of which is maintained and 9 fully furnished and equipped rooms. There is a public domed semi circular bathing pool, built in the same architectural style as the other thermal springs on Lesvos, with separate areas for steam baths.
