MUNICIPALITY OF POLICHNITOS
If you could run an almost straight line from
Achladeri (nearly the
right tip of the Gulf of Kalloni) to meet the south
coastline of Lesvos just before Drota, you will find
that the Municipality of Polichnitos (45 km from
Mytilini) occupies the area to the west of that
line.
The surroundings are very pleasing to the eye since
the location is surrounded by olive groves, thick
pine forests, the clear waters of the Aegean Sea and
the fishing grounds of the Gulf of Kalloni. It is
blessed with the best beaches, coves and harbours of
Lesvos, natural salt pans producing the whitest salt
in Europe, two thermal springs, several wetlands
attracting migrant and indigent birds, Palaeolithic
fossils and archaeological findings illuminating its
historical past, since the ancient times.
The Municipality of Polichnitos is comprised of 8
villages of various sizes (total population app.
5000 people):
